CHARLTON, hamlet, now suburb, of Andover
Hypothetical Old English 'Ceorlatun'='farm of the churls', ie: free peasants
of the lowest rank (cf Finberg 1964b). The plural first element suggests a
communal enterprise. Places called 'Charlton' are often found on the fringes of
important estates; Andover was a royal manor in the king's own hands before and
after 1066. They may represent special foundations whose inhabitants could be
called upon to perform boonwork on such estates; ie: they were less free than
the use of the term 'churl' implies.
